The Crowd and the Flag off - Another Tale of Woes.
The Crowd and the Flag off - Another Tale of Woes.
-Sixtus Obadigbo.
A Governor who has failed woefully in delivering the dividends of democracy and fulfilling his campaign promises of 2013 after 3 and half years in office barely draws genuine supporters. The Rented Crowd witnessed at the flag off of his re-election campaign which took place at the Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, tells another sore tale of waste and plundering of scarce resources.
In a desperate move by the incumbent Govornor, Willie Obiano, to secure a second tenure against the resolve of ndi Anambra, due directly to his poor performance in office, resorted to renting cheerleaders for 500 naira each to witness the Flag Off of his campaign.
My investigation yesterday, conducted from Awka, Nteje, Otuocha and Onitsha revealed that Willie Obiano promised to pay 5000 naira to anyone who attends. So many people especially students, maximized the ample opportunity to make 5000 naira for doing nothing but shout "O je be gooo!" and hoist banners bearing the Governor's picture. Buses were made available to convey them to the venue and back to their respective places after the event.
Disappointingly, as expected, many of them registered their displeasure, saying they were surprised to receive 500 naira upon their arrival at Alex Ekwueme Square instead of the 5000 naira promised.
In the early morning of Monday I saw a guy who is a student of Federal Polytechnic Oko, Anambra state with some of his friends on a T-shirt inscribed OSM and OFC, meaning Obiano Solidarity Movement and Obiano Fans Club. Then I asked to know what brought them to Awka that early, and he told me Willie is flagging off his re-election campaign today. Then on my way to Otuocha from Awka, I saw many who converged at Nteje and were moving into 608 buses with same T-shirt, I stopped and demanded to see their coordinator, protesting as if I was one of them who have not received his own stipend, just to ascertain if they were on a paid mission.
I was told my stipend would be given to me immediately we get to Alex Ekwueme Square, I immediately put a call across to Onitsha and somebody confirmed the same to me. Then I left and proceeded to Otuocha where I stayed till evening and witnessed the return of those who who attended from Otuocha.
A friend told me there was information that Gov. Willie Obiano budgeted billions of naira as settlement for the rented crowd. But, his SSA’s, SA’s and others in charge siphoned the funds and shortchanged those who came. Gov. Willie Obiano also made it compulsory that every civil servant in the state must attend by signing attendance register at the venue or lose their job/salary.
I have taken my time to think about the possible debt profile of Anambra state by 17th March 2018 when Gov. Willie Obiano finally leaves office.
Gov. Willie Obiano must not be allowed to leave the country before 18th March 2018, because he is currently squandering the future of Anambrarians.
